David Lang: prisoner of the state
David Lang’s prisoner of the state is a reimagining of the story of Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, bringing out the themes of imprisonment and freedom in new ways. Lang made the libretto himself, working in references to Machiavelli, Jeremy Bentham, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Hannah Arendt. Decca Gold’s recording is from the world premiere performances, given by the New York Philharmonic and Jaap van Zweden.
