"I made this recording in 2009. It was part of my first place award at the 18th Her Royal Highness Princess Christina International Competition in Spain. I was privileged to be the first-ever Russian to win this prestigious world classical music contest.
That year marked the 70th birthday of the remarkable contemporary Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. His art has always been very close to my heart, so I decided to join the celebration with this recording.
I tried to bring together many different aspects of Leo Brouwer's creativity by recording music that he wrote during different periods of his life. I hope that this album can offer a fascinating journey to all those who love music of the previous centuries as well as of our times.
Maestro Leo Brouwer masterfully reveals the capabilities of the guitar, its variability. He connects Cuban folklore with the classical tradition, sometimes quoting Beethoven or even imitating the music of the Renaissance. His unique language speaks to the world through the classical guitar.
This recording was a particular challenge: I was not just the performer but also the sound producer. Having listened to the recorded material, I took notes and recorded certain passages again and again until I reached the desired result. I had to work 16 hours every day. After three days, I left the studio with a fully completed album.
A whole decade passed between that day and the moment of the official release of this recording, and now congratulations are once again in order: this year Maestro Leo Brouwer celebrates his 80th birthday!" – Artyom Dervoed
