Kodály
Three chamber works with cello by the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály are the focus of Julian Steckel's album. The Sonata for Solo Violoncello is a major work in the 20th-century cello literature: over half an hour in length, filled with virtuoso elements, and crucially informed by the folk music that was so important to Kodály. Steckel studied this work with teachers including the great Hungarian-American cellist János Starker. For the album's other two works, Steckel is joined by pianist Paul Ravinius and violinist Antje Weithaas respectively.
