Saint-Saëns & Farrenc: Romantic Dreams
The period ensemble Ironwood present two contrasting French Romantic piano quintets, performed on gut-stringed instruments and an Erard concert grand from 1869. Louise Farrenc’s Piano Quintet No. 1 in A minor was written in 1839 and couples a classical structure with colourful, Schubertian harmony. Camille Saint-Saëns’s Piano Quintet Op. 14, also in A minor, is a more expansive work of 1855.
