BRIDGING WORLDS: Neues Orchester Basel - Dvořák’s New World Symphony featuring Swiss folk music & sounds of India
About this event
In our daily lives, countless sounds and melodies are created – from ringtones to bedtime songs – which tell us about our ways of life. The program “Bridging Worlds” is dedicated to such connections between everyday life, language and music.
These links have a long tradition: Dvořák was inspired by the American music of the "New World" for his Ninth Symphony, including Native American music and African-American Spirituals. The composer David Lichtsteiner brings a special tradition from India to the concert hall: commissioned by the NOB, he visited the remote Indian village of Kongthong, where mothers invent melodies for each child instead of names. Thus, in the middle of the jungle, tones and melodies merge to form peculiar soundscapes in which each child recognizes itself. "Jingrwai Lawbei" brings a piece of this fascinating world of sounds to Switzerland.
In Switzerland, too, musical expressions such as pastoral calls or alpine blessings are part of the landscape, interwoven with the everyday life from which they originate. Together with the ensemble Tritonus, the NOB creates a special concert dramaturgy from this heritage of locally rooted sounds.
Your ticket purchase will directly support the participating artists through IDAGIO’s Fair Artist Payout Model: IDAGIO pays 80% of the net revenue directly to the performers.
This stream is available to watch until December 31, 2021.
