René Pape: Antonín Dvořák’s Biblical Songs
About this event
One of the world’s leading basses and multi-Grammy Award winner, René Pape makes his highly anticipated debut in IDAGIO’s Global Concert Hall, presenting Dvořák’s contemplative Biblical Songs. This intimate evening is filmed by his son – filmmaker and director Leopold Pape – at the Maria am Wasser Church in René’s picturesque hometown of Dresden.
Pape will recite the texts in German (with English subtitles) and perform the sacred song cycle in its original Czech language. Joining him is a fantastic group of instrumentalists, including pianist Katharina Pfeiffer, violinists Annekathrin Rammelt and Constanze Sandmann, violist Andreas Kuhlmann, cellist Christian Bergert, double bassist Andreas Dude, and oboist Arnfried Falck.
“[In] Dvořák’s Biblical Songs, Mr. Pape’s attentiveness to details – his movingly precise enunciation of each syllable of “holubice” (“dove”); his leaning into “zemi” (“heavens”) – was wedded to an overarching gentle grandeur. “God Is My Shepherd” was a hushed, mature prayer, and he bit into the final number, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song,” with relish.” (The New York Times)
