“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Paavo Järvi – LIVE
CANCELLATION
The planned livestream of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream from this Friday, March 26, 2021 unfortunately has to be cancelled. A person close to the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich has tested positive for Covid-19. There are no further positive cases among the musicians, Paavo Järvi and the management team. However, due to quarantine measures, the orchestra cannot continue this week's rehearsals and recordings.
The CD recordings of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream can also not be continued at the moment. We very much hope to complete these at a later date. Until then, we wish you all the best. Stay healthy.

About this event
Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream – live from the Tonhalle Maag in Zurich. The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under the baton of its Music Director Paavo Järvi takes you into the fabulous dream world of Mendelssohn's incidental music to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream – and gives you a first impression of their forthcoming recordings of Mendelssohn's orchestral works.
What would a film be without music? Maybe something like play would have been without music in the 19th century. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy played a significant role in this development, when, by order of the culture-savvy Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he wrote his brilliantly evocative and imaginative score for performances of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1842/43.
This "soundtrack" has been one of Mendelssohn's most popular works ever since. And it's no surprise, since he found exactly the right tone for the varied atmospheres and moods of Shakespeare's enchanted plot revolving around Oberon, the king of the fairies. Mendelssohn had already composed his quicksilver Overture almost twenty years earlier – at the age of 17 – as a standalone work, which he then enriched with further numbers, including such hits such as the ever-popular Wedding March.
