Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra: Connesson Premiere & Rachmaninoff
About this event
The program begins with a new concerto for oboe by Guillaume Connesson written for our own Principal Oboe Dwight Parry. The work “evokes three ‘poetic phases’ of the day: L’heure bleue, that period between day and night when the sky fills up with a darker blue than the earlier sky blue. It is during the first instants of l’heure bleue that all the birds start to sing, and in summer the fragrance of the flowers becomes more intense. L’heure exquise is the moment of ‘a vast and tender appeasement’…L’heure fugitive is the time of pleasures and love, the ‘carpe diem’ of Horace, with these verses of Lamartine as an epigraph: ‘So, let us love, so, love! from the fleeting hour let us hasten and enjoy it!’” —Connesson
Rachmaninoff’s vast romantic Second Symphony is completely different from Connesson’s concerto. “I fell in love with this piece when I was a teenager and I have waited over 45 years to conduct this piece. I am so excited to conduct it now. This piece is just irresistible music, where you are swimming in the harmony, melody, rhythmic life of this music.” —Louis Langrée, Music Director
