Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart: Bach's Mass in B minor
About this event
Bach's Mass in B minor is regarded as his Opus summum et ultimum – the last, and at the same time, the most highly regarded of his works. With this masterpiece, the Gaechinger Cantorey and Hans-Christoph Rademann celebrate their debut in the Global Concert Hall.
First composed in 1733 as a Missa brevis (with Kyrie and Gloria), it was at the same time Bach’s application piece for the title of royal-Polish and electoral Saxon court composer. In 1748/49 the now Kantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig drew on his rich stock of existing compositions and added some further new movements in order to expand the work into a Missa tota – a complete mass – a piece which stands apart from all other religious works in the history of music, both in its uniqueness and its variety.
