Prokofiev: Cinderella – Orchestre et Ballet de l’Opéra national de Lyon, Yakov Kreizberg
About this event
Prokofiev began composing Cinderella at the same time as his opera War and Peace, but whereas the Tolstoy opera reflected directly the problems of suffering and survival of the early years of the Soviet Union, the fairytale ballet would do so only indirectly. Life in Stalin’s Soviet state, however, was nothing other than that described in the fairy tale. The vulnerable Cinderella is abandoned to the mercy of an uncaring stepmother, her only hope and consolation being a picture hanging on the wall in memory of her benevolent true mother — just as in those days a portrait of Lenin adorned the living rooms of every household. At a time of mental and physical terror, the Cinderella fairy tale mirrored the Russian population’s need for consolation and the hope of justice to come – a yearning for the triumph of good over evil.
