Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf – Royal Ballet School, Covent Garden, Murphy
About this event
Written in 1936, the abiding strength of Peter and the Wolf is its simplicity. Its text, by Prokofiev himself, has the repetitive structure of the best nursery stories, while the characters are chosen with an eye and ear for lucid musical personification. Each of the themes, too, has an instantly perceivable shape and instrumentation, and the narration is designed to lead the innocent listener step by step into the world of Peter and his family, and by extension into the world of the orchestra that embodies them. The whole narrative is a miracle of directness and of the effectiveness of simple musical shapes. Most of all, though, it is an outstanding example of Prokofiev's sheer inventiveness and craftsmanship as a composer.
