Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig – Mahler’s Symphony No. 8
About this event
The highlight of the International Mahler Festival in Leipzig in May 2011 was the final performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 – the “Symphony of a Thousand”. Riccardo Chailly commanded almost five hundred musicians in this monumental Mahler symphony, a work which the composer regarded as his Opus Summum.
The audience experienced a superb performance from the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the baton of its chief conductor Riccardo Chailly, without doubt one of the most exciting Mahler interpreters of our days. Orchestra and conductor were supported by a promising young ensemble of singers.
“… quite the most immaculate performance I have ever experienced.” – Norman Lebrecht on artsjournal.com
“… this is one Mahler symphony … Chailly’s rendering leads the field on DVD.“ – BBC Music Magazine
“simply breathtaking [..] this is not only the best played live performance of the work on DVD but it’s among the most musically satisfying ever recorded.” – International Record Review
