This is a live, interactive online course all about the music and legacy of Leonard Bernstein. Over the course of four live sessions you will be exploring the rich legacy of one of the 20th Century’s foremost musicians, featuring fascinating video and audio clips, as well as guest appearances by numerous cultural luminaries.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN, CITIZEN ARTIST: AN OVERVIEW
This introductory session organizes Bernstein’s multifaceted legacy into four main categories: composer, conductor, educator, and activist/humanitarian.

CANDIDE AND WEST SIDE STORY
Incredibly enough, these two iconic Bernstein musicals, while vastly different from each other, were written simultaneously. This session is a close examination of the two works. MASS – AN INNER SELF-PORTRAIT
In honor of MASS’s 50th anniversary year, this session explores Bernstein’s most rule-breaking and deeply personal work. This fourth and final session demonstrates how words were every bit as beloved to Leonard Bernstein as were musical notes – and the exploration touches on works in which music is intertwined with text – the latter often being Bernstein’s own.
