Cassol: Requiem pour L. - Inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Quarterly Critics' Choice 1.2019 - German Record Critics' Award. Mozart's final work - handed down to us as a fragment - has already inspired many completions and re-workings. In the course of several years of research, the Belgian jazz composer and arranger Fabrizio Cassol has examined the piece profoundly. His "Requiem pour L.”, dedicated to the deceased "Lucy", is scored for guitar, bass, drums, euphonium and likembe, with seven singers reciting in five African languages and Latin. The choreographer Alain Platel, of Les ballets C de la B, was responsible for the stage production, the Congolese hip-hop singer Fredy Massamba for a Dies Irae informed by a West African view of the hereafter. This stirring contribution to ars moriendi - perhaps the most important art-form of all - touches all the senses! (For the jury: Nikolaus Gatter)
