Haydn2032 - Haydn Night «Majestäten» with Giovanni Antonini, Christian Tetzlaff and Basel Chamber Orchestra
About this event
The 15th project of Haydn2032 is entitled "Majestäten" (Majesties). An alternative name might be “(for) Mother and Daughter”, since it couples two works written for or in honour of Maria Theresa with on of the Paris Symphony, No. 85 “La Reine”, which is said to have been a particular favourite of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. Those symphonies are No. 50, which delighted the Empress’s ears when she visited Prince Nicolaus at his “Hungarian Versailles” in 1773, and No. 62, which dates from 1780, the year of her 40th anniversary on the throne, destined also to be the last year of a life as eventful as it was glorious.
In the lead-up to the 300th anniversary of Joseph Haydn's birth in 2032, the Haydn2032 project sees the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel is organising, producing and financing the performance and recording of all 107 of the composer's symphonies by Il Giardino Armonico and Basel Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, one of the most highly-respected specialists in baroque, early classical and classical music. The first ten volumes have been released on the Alpha Classics label with two further volumes planned for release every year.
