The 'piano piece' is a musical classification in its own right – an entirely unique and wonderfully varied array of musical styles and forms, encompassing much more than the individual movements of a piano sonata. Be that as it may, we give in to the need to classify musical phenomena and understand them as they are understood, experienced and loved by vocally-opinionated classical music lovers.
Accordingly, this selection of the 'top 20' classical piano pieces (ranked here successively, from 20th place to number one) also features examples of the aforementioned individual piano sonata movements, such as the "Alla Turca" from Mozart's A major sonata KV 331, the first movement of Beethoven's rather inaptly dubbed "Moonlight Sonata" (the nickname of this rather creepy than romantic sonata was not chosen by the composer himself), the "Marche funèbre" of Chopin's B-flat minor sonata op. 35, as well as further Mozart offerings, namely the "Andante grazioso", also from Mozart's A major sonata, and the first movement of his "Sonata facile" KV 545. Also included in this countdown are two works composed for cembalo, which are nevertheless beloved of pianists and consequently not to be overlooked.
So let's open the floor to public opinion and begin the heated debate on the following placements according to 'popularity' – whatever that means...
