Gioachino Rossini: Le Comte Ory
About this event
'Le comte Ory' is a comedic opera by Gioachino Rossini set in medieval France. The story revolves around the titular character, Comte Ory, who is a handsome and cunning nobleman who sets his sights on the beautiful young Adèle, who is under the protection of the Lady Isolier while her brother, the Count of Formoutiers, is away at the Crusades. To win Adèle’s affection, Ory disguises himself as a hermit and infiltrates the castle, where he tries various schemes to get close to her. However, his plans are constantly thwarted by Lady Isolier and her guardian, Raimbaud. Ory eventually manages to gain access to the castle, but is ultimately discovered and chased away by the guards. The opera, Rossini’s only French comedy and first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1828, is known for its sparkling music, including well-known arias such as Adèle’s aria “En proie à la tristesse”, Comte Ory’s aria “Que les destins prospères” and the duet Ory-Isolier “Voyez donc, voyez donc le traître”. Rossini’s score is characterized by its elaborate vocal lines, quick-witted humour, and beautiful ensemble pieces. 'Le comte Ory' is a delightful and light-hearted comedy that showcases Rossini’s skill at blending humour and music. The witty and whimsical characters, combined with the sparkling score, make it a joyful and entertaining opera that has become a staple of the classical repertoire.
