Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto – compelling, blood-curdling and beautiful – is being performed for the first time at Bregenz Festival in 2019. Stage and film director Philipp Stölzl (Medicus & Goethe), known not only for his successful productions at Europe’s leading opera houses as well as for his music videos for Madonna or the German band Rammstein, created a spectacular setting which provoked storms of enthusiasm among the critics. Stölzl impressively succeeded in highlighting the striking contrasts between spectacle and intimate chamber drama on the world’s largest lake stage.

Rigoletto has become one of the most popular operas in the entire repertory of Giuseppe Verdi, with stupendous music for the baritone, soprano and tenor leads. The outstanding cast led by Vladimir Stoyanov as Rigoletto, Stephen Costello as the Duke and Mélissa Petit as Gilda thrill the audience not only with their vocal performance but also with full physical commitment, supported by the Wiener Symphoniker under Enrique Mazzola’s nuanced and precise conducting.

The staggering show has attracted not only 200,000 visitors to 20 sold out performances but also close to 2 million TV-viewers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland alone. “A Masterpiece” (Operawire).
