He wrote widely for the piano – four concertos, of which nos. 2 and 3 are the most famous and well-loved, two piano sonatas, large-scale works like the Corelli Variations and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and many shorter works and miniatures, all of which reveal the variety and breadth of his musical imagination. He wrote gorgeously romantic piano music, rich in textures and colours with beautiful long-spun melodies, dramatic, lyrical and emotional, and everywhere his music seems to evoke the vastness of the Russian nation and his nostalgia for it.
